Week 10.2a: FIRST Article Highlight with 2 Topic Sentences

Andy McKee interview

Andy Mckee is a guitar maestro whose YouTube videos have had more than 80 million views.

For someone who can genuinely be described as a YouTube guitar god, Andy McKee comes across as refreshingly grounded.
I met him in the Young Street Premier Inn in Sheffield just as he was checking in prior to a concert. He was in good form and used the word awesome a lot. His live playing was going well; his new album, Joyland, had been received well. And the hits on YouTube? As we spoke they were already well over 80 million...
We spent several minutes trying to define exactly what kind of a guitarist McKee is. Broadly he falls into the “fingerstyle” category, meaning that he plays without a pick. It’s not classical, it’s not country, it’s not new age and it certainly isn’t Heavy Metal, his first love. He has sometimes been filed under “singer-songwriter” which, given the fact he doesn’t sing, is a bit odd. McKee himself uses the term “modern instrumental acoustic guitar”.
Whatever you call it, it has to be seen – and heard - to be believed. Using specially crafted instruments – a baritone guitar, a fanned fret guitar and his signature harp guitar (with six extra non-fretted base strings), McKee employs a number of techniques and altered tunings to achieve a richly textured, melodic range of sounds.
It was the techniques that catapulted him to YouTube stardom. A few hastily shot videos of him performing towards the end of 2006 were posted on the site and rapidly caught the eyes of guitar aficionados – and lovers of the visually quirky - worldwide. The song “Drifting”, in which McKee brings his left hand over the neck of the guitar to hit the strings from above while simultaneously using his right to tap out drum-like rhythms on the body of the instrument, has to date attracted more than 45 million views; other songs have had well over 10 million apiece.
“People who had never heard of fingerstyle guitar found that once they did they really liked it,” said McKee. “That’s the great thing about YouTube; it’s democratic. Instead of record companies telling fans what’s cool, they can decide for themselves – and be surprised. People leave comments like, ‘I’m normally into rap and Jay Z but, man, I love this acoustic guitar stuff’.”
It was when McKee found himself simultaneously occupying positions one, two and three of most-viewed YouTube clips that he realised he might have to give up the day job teaching guitar in his home town of Topeka, Kansas, and concentrate on performing and writing.
New albums followed – most notably Gates of Gnomeria – and he started headlining at concerts rather than supporting others. That said, this year, he scaled new heights when he was chosen to play guitar alongside Prince for his Welcome 2 Australia tour.
McKee insists that he doesn’t deliberately seek to make his songs technically difficult “just to look cool”. “I experiment with new tunings and then begin to hear melodic ideas,” he said. “Then I try to figure out how I am going to play these parts at the same time – and that’s where the techniques come in. But I like to think that in addition to watching, people like the music as well.”
There is undeniably an emotional depth and harmonic quality to some of McKee’s songs that goes way beyond an ability to play a guitar as if he had two pairs of hands. Those inspired by people (“The Friend I Never Met”, a tribute to the fingerstyle pioneer Michael Hedges; “Rylynn”, written following the death of a friend’s daughter) and places (“Into the
Ocean” – after the Pacific) are particularly powerful.

There is a playfulness too. On stage in Sheffield, during a lively take on Toto’s 1980s classic “Africa”, he winked as he broke momentarily into Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”. Picking up the harp guitar (“the boomstick”), he joked about an appearance at an international harp guitarists’ convention – “starring all five of us”.
For all the YouTube success, McKee, now 33, remains in touch and personable. He certainly wants to explore further - on Joyland for the first time he introduced other instruments in the form of cello and drums and may develop this further, possibly forming a band.
For now, though, numbers at his concerts are modest (usually just a few hundred) and he likes to make himself available to “meet and greet” fans afterwards.
I spoke to one, Jenny, who like most of those in the Sheffield audience that night had come to McKee via YouTube. “When I watched his videos I thought he must be faking it,” she said. “Well tonight showed me that he wasn’t. It’s for real.”

Week 9.2 Persuasive topic building: Advice

I want guitar.
Guitar is a famous instrument, and gives me relax, busking experience, and new hobby. Whenever I was exhausted from outside work, Playing guitar makes me only concentrate on this 6 string instrument, not hard labor. As my guitar skill is getting better, I could playing this for people who are wating in front of bus station and for walking people.
And as I playing this, my hobby was changed from playing computer games to playing guitar.

I need smart-phone.
Smartphone is a time-killing obstacle, but gives me information, contacting ability, and  control. When I went a trip with friends in Tokyo, Japan, We lost way, but We could find way by using map application. Also We make a call to hotel manager to know what vehicle is find to get hotel. Lastly, during mid-term exam, I tested myself about using cell-phone, to control my endurance.

I think that to overcome family problem, we have to understand each other, take responsibility, and take talking time with whole family.
Family problem is hard to overcome, however we can get over this by understanding each other, taking responsibility about behavior, and taking talking time with whole family. I fought my mom for sleeping time, that she insisted I sleep before 1 a.m. ,but I wanted to play until sun rises, I rejected her request, that's because me and my mom couldn't understand each other. Also, I used to take my sister's clothes without permission, so I fought my sister quiet a bit, that's because I didn't take responsibility about my behavior. At last, sadly, time at home is very small than outside time, so our time to talk with family face to face is really little, so I think that there are problems between family members.

Lastly, bicycle reminds me that I should develop technology & think creatively about surrounding thing, for example, bicycle's tire. By riding a bicycle, I can get naturalism, time, and occupation's fate.

The article about Korea and Japan government’s deal about comfort women aroused my experience about Monument to comfort women, in front of the Japanese embassy, which was grief, fury, and hope. In front of the Japanese embassy, I could feel about concerned women’s anguish, which was about Japanese brutality behavior to young girls. The chief of assembly said this assembly has been hold since 1980s, but Japanese government don’t meet comfort women, this behavior is really evoke hostility. However I could also feel this assembly’s desire that now condition is bad, but someday this will change , cause this assembly is not alone. My experience about in front of Japanese embassy, I could sense bitterness, resentment, and wish.

Hopes for improved security ties undermined as former WWII sex slaves and their allies protest agreement

SEOUL—A deal between Japan and South Korea to settle a dispute over wartime sexual slavery helps create a path for the countries to work more closely on regional security, but a backlash in Korea threatens to complicate progress.
On Monday, Tokyo and Seoul said they had “finally and irreversibly” resolved a decadeslong spat over reparations for Korean women used as forced sex workers by the Japanese military in the 1930s and 1940s. Under the deal, Tokyo agreed to pay around $8 million in support funds for the surviving women and extended an apology from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
U.S. officials heralded the agreement as a breakthrough that improves coordination between its allies in Northeast Asia against the military threat from North Korea and China’s increasing assertiveness. A senior U.S. official said it was as strategically important for Washington as the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal.
One potential step to increase bilateral cooperation is for Seoul to sign an agreement with Tokyo on sharing military intelligence, such as on North Korea’s nuclear missile program. South Korea has declined to complete the pact since 2012 because of domestic political pressure against closer links with Japan. Instead, the U.S. acts as a go-between to pass on information between the Asian nations.
In October, South Korea’s defense minister told his Japanese counterpart that historical grievances, such as the issue of sexual slavery of Korean women, needed to be addressed before a deal can be forged on direct exchanges of intelligence. The so-called “comfort women” dispute is the core issue of several legacies of Japan’s 35-year colonization of the Korean peninsula from 1910 to the end of World War II that continue to irritate bilateral ties.

A spokesman for the South Korean Defense Ministry didn’t respond to a request for comment on whether Seoul would consider moving forward with the military information-sharing deal.
South Korea’s government may first be focused on building domestic support for the comfort women agreement. A survey published on Thursday by Realmeter showed 50.7% of the South Korean public felt the deal was unsatisfactory, compared with 43.2% who were satisfied. The dissatisfaction rating rose to around 70% among those in their 20s and 30s, the poll showed.
Related Coverage
The survey results didn’t include reasons for the respondents’ answers, but former comfort women and activists have criticized the agreement for failing to state the legal liability of the Japanese government. A South Korean Foreign Ministry official said in a media briefing that the agreement is sufficient because it acknowledges Japan’s responsibility for the system of sexual slavery.
Some former comfort women have also been angered by the government’s lack of consultation with them during negotiations with Japan. “Why should the government rashly reach a deal? We won’t accept it,” local media reported that 90-year-old former comfort women Kim Kun-ja told a senior government official during a visit to a shelter for the women the day after the agreement was announced.
Activists have pledged to continue to oppose the agreement. On Wednesday, two former comfort women joined a protest of several hundred people outside the Japanese Embassy in Seoul against the deal. The same day, a local court opened a damages suit against the Japanese government on behalf of 10 former comfort women.

A further flashpoint is the status of a statue outside the Japanese Embassy representing a young comfort woman. Tokyo wants the statue removed but a separate Realmeter opinion poll showed two-thirds of South Koreans opposed to relocating it.
The agreement has also been slammed by opposition politicians and prompted critical newspaper editorials. “The deal amounts to a treaty in which the people’s rights are surrendered,” Moon Jae-in, chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party, said on Wednesday, calling the deal “invalid.”
“An agreement in jeopardy,” was the headline on a Thursday editorial in the center-right Joongang Ilbo that expressed concerns about whether Koreans would accept the deal.
Despite the backlash, the agreement has a better chance of holding together than other efforts in recent decades to resolve the comfort women dispute, experts say. Jennifer Lind, an East Asia specialist at Dartmouth College, says the commitment of the South Korean government to a resolution for the first time, as well as Japanese conservatives aligned with Mr. Abe, is crucial.
“Having those two groups on board is very important for the agreement to really succeed in putting this controversy to rest,” she said.
On Thursday, South Korean President Park Geun-hye sought to bolster support for the deal in a statement issued by her office, saying it would be “extremely difficult” to reach a deal to satisfy everyone.
If “critics can’t accept the agreement and try to take the issue back to the beginning...there is little we can do further to help the survivors while they are alive,” she said.
Still, some observers caution that South Korea’s opposition may continue to pressure the government over the deal and could even try to renegotiate the dispute under a new president, due to be elected at the end of 2017. “I don’t think we’ve seen the last of this,” said Karl Friedhoff, a Korea expert at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
